MPs vote in favour of assisted dying

MPs have voted on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill vote at Second Reading and have voted in favour of the bill. The results are 330 in favour and 275 against.

This does not mean that the bill has become law, but that it will go to Committee Stage to go through line-by-line scrutiny, a process which is expected to take several months. MPs will now further scrutinise the legislation, and they can also propose or debate amendments.

A strong theme of the debate was that the government urgently needs to resolve problems in palliative care, regardless of what happens next with the Bill.

We will report on the process as we have more news.
