At the Stakeholder Forum for the Godalming College Centre of Vocational Excellence in Surrey for Social Care and Children’s employers and stakeholders received a report on the progress being made on their development plan. Key achievements were the introduction of Paperfree NVQ’s and the Virtual Learning Environment, Leadership and Development programmes including a Foundation Degree as well as currently providing to 572 NVQ candidates across the sector.
Train To Gain – Talk To Us!
Final preparations are underway for the second Surrey and Sussex Social Care and Social Work Showcase event to be held on 14 March at Effingham Park Hotel near Gatwick.
Last year’s event attracted over 700 delegates from Surrey and Sussex. The event will be opened this year by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey Sarah Goad and Andrew Webster Executive Director Families from Surrey County Council.

Yes! This FREE event is aimed at all employers and staff in the independent and statutory adult and children’s social care sector and social workers. There will be more than 40 exhibitions to visit for invaluable advice and guidance on training, as well as business and leadership development. Once again, our seminar programme offers an exciting mix of speakers from Skills for Care, The Department of Health, CSCI as well as seminars on a wide range of practice topics. Children, Young People and Families Workforce Development Council Regional Development Manager Rebecca Leete spoke to the CoVE Stakeholder Forum about the priorities for the year ahead. The aim of CWDC is to work to improve the lives of children, young people and families by: • Ensuring people working with children have the best possible training, qualifications, support and advice and • Helping children’s organisations and services work together so the child is at the centre of services CWDC is part of the UK Sector Skills Council for Care and Development and works closely with Skills for Care. Over 50 care employers have already taken advantage of this new opportunity to support training of their staff. We have reached 50% of our target allocation for this year but we need more referrals. We can offer NVQs at level 2 and where appropriate level 3 in Health and Social Care, IT, Supervisory Management, Customer Service and Support Services. Eligibility criteria do apply but talk to us and we will guide you through the process. Training is free (small charge for level 3) and for smaller companies wage compensation applies, there is more information on our website www.surreycare.org.uk. Work Placements
Would you be willing to offer work placements for young people or nurses on training programmes? Guildford College have asked for our help for a group of nurses from China undertaking training in Social Care. Placements last for 26 weeks. We are planning to work with schools and open up opportunities for young people to undertake work placements – could you help? Please register your interest with Lisa Mack and we will let you have details.
Wray Park Wins National Award
Congratulations to Antony Coomb and his team at Wray Park for winning the Care Employer of the Year Award at the national Care Training Excellence Awards 2006. Antony was presented with the Award by celebrated singer and forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn. Robert Chamberlain, Chief Executive of awards organisers Care Choices, commented “Wray Park has a wonderful reputation for winning industry Awards and this year is no exception. This Award is thoroughly deserved and demonstrates a commitment to providing quality care services through training and hard work.”
Skills for Care Surrey Conference & Launch of SECAS 28 March - Book Now!
SECAS, the South East Care Advisory Service, is now underway. The project manager is Sarah Pearce who will be working with a team of experienced Advisors on this new service. The service will be launched on 28 March at Leatherhead Golf Club and will be combined with updates on funding and the work of Skills for Care. Lunch will be provided. Care Unlimited Also Celebrates
Two Care Homes in the Care Unlimited group, Chipstead Lodge and Chaldon Rise, were short-listed for Allcora Excellence in Care Awards 2006 under the auspices of the National Care Association. Chaldon Rise was first runner-up with a prize of £2000.
SCA Board of Directors took a day out of their busy schedules to look ahead as part of their business planning process. There was consensus that SCA had come a long way in 18 months with many projects under way to fulfil our aim of ‘Supporting Social Care providers in Surrey’. The Board were not short of ideas for future developments and we look forward to prioritising these and sharing them in a future newsletter.

Overseas Workers Research Update
Many of you have already contributed to the University of Surrey research into employing and training overseas workers. The study will be finished in March but preliminary findings will be of interest to all care employers.
