Flying the Flag at the Surrey Skills Festival
We were delighted to welcome thousands of 13 -14 year olds to our stand at the Surrey Skills Festival to give them a taste of the range of careers the care sector has to offer. Over 9,000 year 9 school children came to the three day event and a further 3,500 adult and older teenage visitors came along to the evening event on 31 January.
Thanks go to Lisa Mack who stepped in to plan and support the management of our joint stand with Surrey County Council, and to volunteers from companies who helped us throughout the three days (see below) and to Surrey County Council who contributed the funding and staff to help. The “hands on” simulation of living with a visual impairment was well received by the young visitors. At the evening event there was a great deal of interest in work in Social Care from more mature visitors including women and men returners to work. One of the areas to develop for next year is to see the evening event as a valuable recruitment opportunity for jobs in the sector. The other reflection is to note that many parents saw Social Care as an alternative for those who were less academic and the career pathway leaflet provided by Skills for Care was a useful tool to show what career options were possible for young people. We also discovered a web site offered by Connexions which offers some excellent options for careers in Social Care – www.connexions-direct.com/wisocialcare. Special thanks to our Skills Festival team: Karen Raggett, Natalie Klue: Rodwell Farm Nursing & Residential Home, Jenny Frogley: NCYPE, Carina Pallant , Debbie Crawley: South London Nursing Homes Ltd. Caroline Jones, Wendy Burton, Maxine Baker, Penny O'Driscoll, Polly Mitchell, Maxine Freeman, Linda Godefroid, Maxine Lucas, Kathy Saunders, Craig Chambers, Cathy Kindlimann, Julie Gonzalez, Assunta Malfa, Christine Goddard, Kathy Mullady, Tina Hood, Lee Fermandel, Alex Beck: Surrey County Council.
• Investors in People Grants
We understand there are grants available for new companies wanted to work towards making a new commitment to IiP (£700) and further grants to contribute to new IiP assessment. Re-accreditation assessment is not included. Register your interest with Lisa Mack and we will refer you when more information is available.
New Partners
SCA are continuing to look for opportunities to offer to Surrey providers. Launched at the November conference, Spectrum purchasing consortium offer discounts to SCA providers (you need to register with Jackie Spooner on 020 8605 0546) and now Citation are offering discounts for Surrey providers (contact 01565 650092 quoting SCA).
Market Survey
Impact of funding Constraints in Surrey
Providers have been expressing a range of concerns about the impact on services of the lower government funding that is coming to Surrey not only in 2007/08 but in future years. Working with Surrey County Council we are pulling together some common areas of concern to support SCC in their representations to government.
Thank you to everyone who completed our survey. The results are being analysed for discussion with SCC re future commissioning plans. We intend to repeat the same exercise for Learning Disability providers. We are very aware that SCC changes in purchasing decisions for people with a learning disability are having an impact on many care providers as the shift to more independent living options is realised. We hope to give further guidance on future commissioning plans in the future.

New Role for SCA Working with Skills for Care
SCA and Skills for Care are set to work even more closely together following the award of the contract for the Coordination role for the former LRN activity to SCA. The new funding provides for support to the Surrey sub group in taking forward an ambitious implementation plan linked directly to the Skills for Care regional business plan and reflecting the needs of Surrey employers. Erica Lockhart will lead on the coordination, supported by Sarah Pearce and Lisa Mack. The coordination team will support the work of the sub group and represent Skills for Care at a wide range of activities in Surrey and through the Region as well as offering practical help to the Chair in fulfilling his responsibilities.
