Because you said something…….
A short DVD for Induction Training Pre-launch Viewing
This 6-minute film aims to raise awareness of Safeguarding Adults. It presents five simple case studies based on events that have happened within Surrey. It encourages everyone to report any concerns they have that someone is being abused or neglected. The DVD is designed to be part of an Induction session for paid employees and volunteers. It can be viewed as part of a trainer led Induction session or within a manager led Induction process. The DVD can also be used as part of general awareness raising for current staff, service users and their carers and the general public
Using the DVD Viewers will gain greater awareness of Safeguarding Adults if they watch the DVD as part of a short presentation or discussion. Below is some background information to help with this and a contact sheet, which can be photocopied for viewers to complete. Safeguarding Adults is an emotional subject and some people may be affected by the content of the DVD. Please prepare your audience for this. Ensure that viewing takes place in a supportive environment and be prepared to deal with any issues or concerns that arise.
Finding out more Raising basic awareness of Safeguarding Adults can only be a beginning. Additional training will be required, especially for those who work with the public. Further training can enable individuals to gain a better understanding of the issues involved and to make appropriate decisions. This training is organised by many employers. Safeguarding Adults
Safeguarding Adults is about preventing and dealing with adult abuse and neglect. The abuse and neglect of adults is wrong. Everyone has a right to live free from violence and fear, to be protected from harm and exploitation and to be independent. Everyone should be treated with respect and dignity.
What is abuse?
Abuse can be physical, psychological, verbal, sexual, domestic, discriminatory or financial. It can result from neglect or from the way an organization, individual or profession acts or behaves. It can happen anywhere and involve anyone. Some people are more vulnerable to abuse and neglect than others because of a disability, age, illness or their personal circumstances. Vulnerable people may not be able to protect themselves against harm or exploitation.
Be alert to signs of abuse:
An unexplained injury; Signs of fear or distress; Withdrawal or self-neglect; Unusual behaviour; A change in financial circumstances.
What to do if you suspect someone is being abused or neglected:
If someone is in immediate danger call 999. Listen to them carefully, do not judge or ask leading questions. Protect and support them – give them your full attention. Report your concerns immediately to your supervisor, manager or use the contact phone numbers below. As soon as possible record in writing exactly what you saw, what you heard and what you did but not what you thought.
Do not ignore it, Do not put it off, Do not keep it secret
