About Surrey Care Association
A short history
Surrey Care Association was formed in 2000 from the former Surrey Residential Homes Association, Surrey Domiciliary Care Association and Surrey Nursing Homes Association. This important alliance was the foundation for Surrey Care Association to become the voice of all Care Homes and Domiciliary Care Agencies in the independent care sector in Surrey. It was a membership subscription Association managed on a voluntary basis by proprietors from a range of care services in the county of Surrey.
Surrey Care Association Ltd has wider objectives than the former Association. It is now fully inclusive to represent the interests of all Independent Sector providers of Care and Support Services for Adults in Surrey. All functions and activities previously provided by the Association continue, and are extended to include support for the development of the Social Care Workforce, alongside Market and Business development. SCA Ltd also continues to work with the Statutory Sector to develop the Independent Care Sector to meet the present and future needs of the population of Surrey. The services include providing support to Supporting People service providers as well as those providing services registered with the CQC.
Do you need to be a member?
The extended functions of the Association align with the needs of the statutory sector with whom we have been working in partnership to develop this broader vision, and as a result they provide an annual grant to support some of the core activities t to enable the Association to work in this way, whilst recognising that the governance of the Association remains fully in the Independent Sector.
One simple effect of the funding arrangements is that membership subscriptions are not required. Eligible organisations simply need to register their representative with the Association, thereby becoming a governance member. No further registration will become necessary in the future except when an organisation changes its representative.
SCA Ltd is a not-for-profit limited company. Through the registration of their representative, an organisation is enabled to participate in the governance of the Association, appointing the Board of Directors annually at the Annual General Meeting. The Association has all the benefits of being a limited liability organisation. The only individual commitment this then involves is that in the unlikely event of the Association going into liquidation each organisation registered will become liable for a contribution of £1.
Surrey Care Association – Key Activities

Obtaining and Administering Funding:
Training – SCA Ltd is highly successful at acquiring funding for training and uses this in a number of ways.
TSI (Training Strategy Initiative) – Skills for Care funding administered by SCA which can be claimed for NVQ training and selected additional programmes. SCA is a lead partner and bids on behalf of providers in Surrey each year (subject to funding allocation from Department of Health to Skills for Care)..
ASCG (Adult Social Care Grant) – A grant from SCC which is used to fund a variety of development activities including our rolling programme of training (provided free at point of access).
Other funding bids, From time to time opportunities arise for short term projects eg currently researching the potential of a Surrey management graduate scheme for Care and workshops for Training Plans.
PSA (Public Sector agreement) SCA is a partner in this agreement which benefited from a “financial reward” from a previous government initiative. SCA is able to make significant bids to support key areas of development e.g. in 2010-2011 the development of Dementia Champions.
Providing Support
SCA operates a number of project streams aimed at supporting providers as [art of its annual programme funded by the Adult Social Care Grant plus using SCA own reserves to invest for the sector e.g. the development of Surreycare.co.uk a shop window for care services in Surrey.
SCA providers can join our Buying Group operated through Spectrum and receive significant discounts on products as well as buying advice.
Providing Information
SCA Ltd works hard to ensure that Surrey Providers are as up to date as possible regarding all aspects impacting on their business. This is achieved via a variety of means.
Newsletter – SCA issues a regular newsletter which is sent to all providers together with the latest fliers promoting for events.
Web Presence – SCA has two web sites, one aimed at providers where it is possible to keep up to date with all activity and download appropriate information and resources www.surreycare.org.ukand its sister site www.surreycare.co.uk designed as a shop window for providers, where they can advertise their services and current job vacancies – All free of charge and self administered. It also provides a low cost opportunity for suppliers to the sector to advertise their services.
E-alerts – we have regular email notifications for matters of importance both on website and via email e.g. when a new tender is announced.
Influencing
SCA are increasingly at the centre of a wide range of knowledge and intelligence about the sector in Surrey. We pride ourselves on being able to use that knowledge in an open and positive way with our partners and our providers. We raise issues of importance to all eg practices over Continence care in Surrey, difficulties with Continuing Care Assessments, working together on key challenges e.g. financial cuts, discussing how providers can support GP Commissioning planning. We keep abreast of national trends and are active in supporting other associations in the South East in their endeavours through SESCA (South East Social care Alliance). We are on key development groups in the county e.g. the Transformation Implementation Board and our representatives sit on working groups for different work streams e.g. Personalisation, Commissioning; Health and Wellbeing Board, Winter Planning etc
Conference – Each year SCA Ltd holds two conferences where delegates benefit from high level speakers and meet suppliers in the exhibition area. This event carries a small charge for catering and venue costs.
Showcase. An annual major event with Sussex, (in March) sponsored by local authorities and commercial organisations. With attendance reaching in excess of 800 providers this is an amazing opportunity to learn the latest in Adult Social Care, and meet an extensive range of suppliers. Free of charge.
Promoting the Sector
We hold annually a Surrey Care Awards evening of celebration – 2011 will be the third event. Awards are to recognise excellence in social care, individuals and teams and awards are sponsored by local businesses, local providers and commercial partners.
Commercial Partners/Sponsors
We do enter into sponsorship agreements for events e.g. Surrey Care Awards, Showcase and are exploring how we can work more closely with organisations that will provide wider support to SCA. For example Lloyds TSB will provide support to business planning workshops or independent financial overview for business, or with Partnership, an organisation that supports self funders with care financial advice. We have a financial arrangement with Spectrum that benefits both providers and SCA. We do not offer any exclusivity in our arrangements and are open about our arrangements.
Working in Partnership
SCA have a 15 year partnership agreement with SCC , but we also work closely with Surrey Coalition for Disabled People, Surrey Independent Living Council (SILC), Action for Carers and Skills for Care.
